Thin apple slices fanned out like tortilla chips and drizzled with loosened peanut butter, then scattered with whatever crunchy, sweet things are in the pantry. Kids build their own and eat a whole apple without noticing. The trick for the drizzle is a spoonful of warm tap water whisked into the peanut butter until it pours.

The lineup

  • 2 crisp apples, sliced thin
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp creamy peanut butter
  • 1 to 2 tbsp warm tap water
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 2 tbsp granola
  • 1 tbsp mini chocolate chips
  • 1 tbsp roasted peanuts or sunflower seeds, chopped

The chop

  1. Toss the apple slices with the lemon juice and fan them out on a plate or the board.
  2. Whisk the peanut butter, honey and 1 tbsp of warm water in the bowl. Add more water until it drizzles off the spoon.
  3. Drizzle the peanut butter over the apples.
  4. Scatter the granola, chocolate chips and peanuts on top.

The extras

Dodge the Carbs

Skip the honey, granola and chocolate, use natural peanut butter, and top with chopped nuts and unsweetened coconut. Lighter, not low.

Beef It Up

Swap half the peanut butter drizzle for plain Greek yogurt.

Future You

Make it and eat it. The lemon juice buys about an hour before the apples brown.

Show Off

Add a drizzle of caramel sauce and a pinch of flaky salt.

Flavor Bomb

A dusting of cinnamon, or swap the honey in the drizzle for Hot Honey and finish with chili-lime seasoning for a sweet-hot version.

Psst

For a nut-free table, use sunflower seed butter and seeds.
